Proposing to my gf overseas - traveling with an engagement ring?

Hi,

I am thinking to propose my girlfriend overseas too.. my situation is slightly more complicated as I will be visiting 4 different countries(I will go through at least 8 gates before getting to my destination..)

So… my plan is to take a thick metal watch(don’t get the wrong idea, it is an elegant watch still), plant and secure the ring inside so it wont move inside or draw attention.
I trust that the ring will have to go through the scanning due to the metal watch..

The question is, can the engagement ring be seen through the scanning? Does anybody know? Any comments? ideas? suggestions?

There is no way that they can find out that the watch has been opened before, i got all the tools to get the work done with no signs at all. The size of the watch is a normal size so it wont draw attention due to size. I could add a photo if required :)

They may ask you to take the watch off to go through security (mainly because of the size). Then they might see that the watch can be opened and they’ll want to know why. So here is where your gf might find out…
I think you might have to just keep the ring in your carry on in a safe pocket inside (maybe with other jewelry - like one of your own rings or a necklace). That way the ring will be mixed in with that jewelry and no one will suspect anything!
Good Luck!! And Congrats!!

why not just keep it safe in a coat pocket? i wear my engagement ring through the airport metal detector and it never goes off..just do that..but why wouldnt you be able to travel with a ring???
best of luck!!

I don’t know if it can be seen if it is inside something else metal, (it probably can or those safety scans would not be that helpful) but that sounds like a good solution to keep your gf from seeing it. Your gf won’t know how to read the xray screen and you can only see the screen if you look at it deliberately. If someone pulls out the watch to inspect it your gf won’t have any idea about the ring.

Step 1: Get the ring insured before you leave. Make sure the coverage is international.

Step 2: Forget the watch idea. TSA and other airport security will be suspicious of secret watch compartments. Plus you don’t want the metal of the watch scratching and rubbing the metal and stone on the ring.

Step 3: Buy a velvet jewelry travel pouch. Store the ring in it. Keep it on your person while passing through security or keep it in the carry-on. If it’s on your person - the ring is not enough metal to set off the detectors. If it’s in your carry-on - the security will be able to see through the pouch and see nothing but a harmless ring. For added assurance - add a mulit-lingual note in the pouch that says “This is an engagement ring, please don’t ruin the surprise!” That should keep them from asking questions.

Step 4: If you’re staying in nice hotels (4 or 5 star) make arrangements with the manager before you arrive, letting them know that you are bringing a surprise for your girlfriend that you need to keep in their hotel safe without her knowing. Hotel managers do this all the time. At budget hotels I wouldn’t take the chance though.
