How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
Actually I am not getting married but my best friend is. We were talking about different kinds of rings and he mentioned the princess cut diamond engagement rings. They seem pretty pricey.
What kind of princess ring is a good deal but less than 2000 bucks?
And just a side question, what is the big deal about princess cut rings vs other kinds of rings?

The only real deals in jewelry is buying used, where you should be able to save at least 25% to 50%. Most used engagement rings, once they’re cleaned up & shined by a jeweler, are impossible to tell from a new one.
I’ve never paid more than 50% for jewelry, and usually less. My wife’s engagement ring retailed for 4800 (20 yrs ago), but I paid only 1700. Ask around, read the want ads … there are always engagement rings for sale.
WARNING: However, never lay out one red cent until you have taken the ring to a jeweler of YOUR choosing to make sure it’s not a fake. Virtually no one can tell the difference anymore without some equipment. Anyone who objects to this is someone you don’t want to buy from.
i got a beautiful ring for 1350, but the diamond is smaller. My fiance didn’t want a big diamond which is why i got that one. A friend of mine however, got one for 8000 with a big rick on top. If yo are looking for less than 2000, i think that 1300-2000 is a good range for a nice ring.
My husband spent about 3 month’s salary on my engagement ring. I know that a lot of guys spend less…but I am glad that he went the extra mile.
Princess cut is just the shape of the diamond…it is a square. It is no more or no less expensive compared to the same exact diamond in another shape. Round diamonds actually sparkle more than princess.
The amount that a diamond costs is based around “the 4 c’s”…here is a website to give you that info…

I think the general rule is 3 months salary. But I would never expect my man to pay that much. I think you can find a reasonable ring for less than that.
I personally don’t like princess cut rings. I don’t like the square diamonds. Personally, I like round diamonds. They are classic and beautiful.
If you get a princess cut diamond ring for under $ 2000, it will be a small diamond. Plus, the quality may not be that great. Tell your friend to check out Jared jewelry. I’ve bought jewelry from there and it’s very reasonable.
Actually prince cut diamond is less expense than the round at the same carat wt. Its not the cut that ultimately determine the price it is the grade of the diamond. The more clarity the higher it is. Meaning. You can get a princess cut diamond for $ 300 but it has impurities (visible cuts cracks along the stone and faucet–which affects the brillance (shine)) So you want to tell your friend to sit down with a jewler at a store and have them show with the scope the differences in the stones. Also, tell your friend to take in consideration the activities she does, because there are different prong settings. The price is also affected if you’re going to get the ring it self in yellow gold 18k or 21 or white gold (which needs re dipping atleast every one to two year in rhodium because there no such thing as white gold) or platinum which is sturdy material but is less shiny and needs to be buffed more often because lack of scratch resistance. One more thing. Be sure he takes in account the seasonhe is getting the ring. If he’s buying it now in the winter months and giving it later. Fingers tend to be smaller in cold seasons than in warmer.
Traditionally it is 2 months salary for an engagement ring.
However, these days, just get whatever you can afford, don’t bother worrying bout any stupid traditions. If your friends girl is going to be concerned that he didn’t spend enough on her ring then your friend deserves better then her.
You should be able to get a decent ring for considerably less then $ 2000.. Shop around.
ENGAGEMENT?? Dont ever spend big money on a “Supposed to happen” event….she can change her mind, not marry, and KEEP the ring……wait til after the wedding, then go buy the big expensive ring….
Well before spending money on a high quality princess cut ring you need to make sure you can afford it and be pretty darn sure she is going to marry you.
That said, I know several people who bought princess cut diamond rings for their wives and they all said it bumped up the love a few notches. These rings are really very nice and well worth it for the right lady.
If your friends wife to be loves him with all her heart and is not even asking for such an expensive ring, then he should go for it. It will make her feel like a queen.
You can probably get a better deal on this kind of ring online versus a jewelry store.
